Adolescent aripiprazole-associated rhabdomyolysis without neuroleptic malignant syndrome: A case report

Abstract

Atypical antipsychotics are frequently used in the treatment of children and adolescents.1 Although there are concerns regarding the proper use of psychotropic drugs, studies on the efficacy and safety of antipsychotics in children and adolescents are limited.2 Aripiprazole is an atypical antipsychotic that has been shown to be effective in treating psychopathologies such as schizophrenia, bipolar affective disorder, mental retardation, autism-related behavioral problems, conduct disorder, and Tourette syndrome. Adverse effects such as weight gain, metabolic effects, extrapyramidal adverse effects and sedation are encountered less frequently with the use of aripiprazole compared with other antipsychotics. These adverse effects are more significant in children and adolescents with ongoing growth and development compared with adults.3 When using antipsychotics, unexpected adverse effects may occur. Herein, we report a case of rhabdomyolysis related to the use of aripiprazole in an adolescent diagnosed with mental retardation.
